BBQ Char Siu Wings

The girls have always loved my BBQ Char Siu Wings and recently asked me to make some because they haven’t had it in such a long time. These savory, sweet, smoky, and super fragrant wings are great as an appetizer, snack, or part of a larger meal. I am also obsessed with the bold red color with charred bits. It makes it look so appetizing. We love it so much. At our house, we love it with steamed Jasmine rice and something pickled!

I BBQed the Char Siu chicken wings in my Weber Searwood Pellet Grill, but works on any grill as long as you set up the grill to 425 degrees indirect BBQing. You should be able to use Air Fryer for this recipe as well.

Ingredients:
3 pounds chicken wings
1 packet NOH Char Siu Seasoning Mix
1/2 cup soy sauce
3/4 cup honey
1/2 cup water
1 bulb garlic, smashed and skin removed
1 knob of ginger, smashed and sliced
1/2 teaspoon crushed black pepper
3 green onions, chopped (for garnish)

Steps:

Marinate Chicken Wings – In a large bowl, combine the marinade ingredients. Add chicken wings and mix well. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours preferably overnight.

BBQ Char Siu Wings – Setup the grill to 375-425 degrees for indirect BBQing. BBQ chicken wings for a half hour. While the chicken wings are bbqing, strain and reduce the marinade down to a glaze. After 30 minutes, flip and brush the chicken wings with the glaze. Repeat this process a couple times every 10 minutes until the chicken wings are crispy, caramelized, and a bit charred.

Tips:

  • BBQ time was about an hour, but may vary depending on grill using and preference
  • You can use any chicken cut you like for this recipe. If using bone-in, the steps will be the same. If using boneless chicken thighs, grill over medium-high direct heat.
  • If you don’t have a grill, place chicken wings on a wire rack and roast in the oven using the same temperature.
