Thai Sweet Chili sauce is the perfect dipping sauce for all freshly fried foods. However, I find that the store-bought stuff is not spicy enough for me so I wanted to experiment and make some at home and kick up the spice level up a notch or two!
Using @hotthaikitchen’s recipe as inspiration, I made my own spicy, sweet, and tangy Thai Sweet Chili Sauce using store-bought chili garlic sauce for convenience. Surprised by how easy it is to make at home with a couple of simple ingredients. Not too shabby for my first attempt. Excited to use it for fried foods and grilled proteins over the next few weeks.
Ingredients:
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup rice vinegar
½ cup water
¼ cup Chili Garlic Sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon cornstarch + 3 tablespoons water for cornstarch slurry
Steps:
Make Sauce – Combine granulated sugar, rice vinegar, and water in a small saucepan over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Add chili garlic sauce and simmer for a few minutes. Add cornstarch slurry and stir for another few minutes until the sauce thickens.
Tips:
- Use more or less chili garlic sauce depending on how spicy you want it.
- I used store-bought chili garlic sauce for convenience.
- This is a plant-based friendly recipe, you can amplify the flavors by adding fish sauce or soy sauce.
