Cá Muối Chiên, Fried Fish Steaks, is one of the simplest and most delicious fried fish recipes ever. Eating this always reminds me of my childhood. This was one of my favorite fish to eat as a kid because there were barely any bones and I was not afraid to eat it and choke on some bones.
Fish Steaks are super easy to prepare and pairs perfectly with a delicious soup, stir-fried veggies, and steamed rice. I normally just use Cá Thu, King Mackerel Steaks, but I always see Salmon Steaks at the store and tried it out as well. Personally, I love the meaty texture of the Cá Thu more but the salmon option is there!
The meaty fish steaks are simply seasoned with salt. For this fried fish, I usually season the fish a little more generously with salt since it will be eaten with plenty of bowls of rice and a canh, Vietnamese Soup. However, you can salt it to taste!

Ingredients:
2 pounds King Mackerel and/or Salmon Steaks
1 tablespoon salt
Oil, for frying
Steps:
Season Fish Steaks– Season fish steaks generously with salt. Let the fish steaks marinate for at least 30 minutes.
Pan-fry Fish Steaks– Heat skillet on medium-high heat. Pan-fry fish steaks for 4-5 minutes on each side until a beautiful crust forms on the fish steaks. Serve with hot steamed rice and your favorite canh.
Tips:
- I normally find these fish steaks at the Vietnamese Grocery Store
- You can always ask the fish monger to cut the steaks to desired thickness
- If you’re eating the fish steaks without Vietnamese soup, reduce the amount of salt added.
