I love thick and crunchy homestyle tortilla chips. Unfortunately, chips are so expensive, and a bag of homestyle tortilla chips at at my local Hispanic grocery store is so expensive, at around $7 a bag! So when I have bags of leftover corn tortillas, I love to make Tortilla Chips at home. It is super easy to make and only requires three ingredients…Corn tortillas, Oil, and Salt.
Homemade tortilla chips is super simple to make, and I’m obsessed and love the crunch and taste of freshly fried and salted tortilla chips! If you’re counting calories, it might not be a good thing because its so addictive, but so worth it!
Ingredients:
1 pound corn tortillas
2 cups frying oil
Salt, to taste
Steps:
Cut Tortillas – Cut corn tortillas into triangular shapes.
Make Tortilla Chips – Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium heat until the oil reaches 350 degrees. Carefully and without overcrowding the skillet, add tortilla pieces to the hot oil and fry for about 2-3 minutes, flipping as necessary, or until the pieces golden and crispy. Transfer the chips to a wire rack using a spider skimmer/slotted spoon and sprinkle with salt immediately.
Tips:
- Remove the chips as soon as it starts turning golden brown on both sides. The residual heat will continue cooking and browning tortilla chips after you remove it from the oil.
- It’s important to salt the chips while it’s still hot immediately after you remove it from the oil.
- For a healthier alternative option, you can bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes in the oven, flipping halfway.
