My go-to burger at In-n-Out Burger is always a 3×2 Animal Style and I was in a burger mood and recreated my favorite burger at home on my flat top grill. This burger starts with 3 burger patties and 2 slices of American Cheese. The burger patties are cooked with mustard, and pickles, grilled onions, and extra spread are added to complete the full Animal Style experience.

You can customize the amount of burger patties and cheese that goes onto this amazing cheeseburger. I personally like 3×2, but the girls only like a regular single-patty cheeseburger. I think the burger patties at In-N-Out are less than 2 ounces, but that’s what I went with so it can be more satisfying.

Ingredients:
1 pound 80/20 ground chuck, separated into 8 2-ounce patties
Hamburger buns, lightly toasted
Salt and Pepper
Burger Sauce
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Grilled Onions
Yellow Mustard

Grilled Onions Ingredients:
2 large sweet onions, diced
2 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt

Burger Sauce Ingredients:
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 teaspoon sweet relish
1 teaspoon lemon juice
salt, pinch
pepper, pinch

Steps:

Make Grilled Onions – Heat a large skillet on medium-low heat. Ā Add vegetable oil and diced onions. Stir occasionally for about 45 minutes or until onions are caramelized and golden brown. Set aside.
Make Burger Sauce – Combine all the burger sauce ingredients in a medium bowl and mix well. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Form Burger Patties – Dump and loosen ground chuck onto a baking sheet. Ā Weigh each patty to 2 ounces. Loosely form round burger patties without overworking the meat. Refrigerate burger patties for at least 30 minutes.
Grill Burgers – Setup flat-top grill to medium-high heat.Ā  Brush burger patty with yellow mustard. Cook burger patties for a minute. Season with salt and pepper.Ā  Flip burger patties, add American cheese, grilled onions, and cook the second side for an additional minute.
Ā
Assemble Burgers – Spread burger sauce on top of the bottom bun. Add pickles, sliced tomato, lettuce, and whatever burger patty and cheese combination you like. Add the top bun.

Tips:

  • I used a tortilla press to form uniform-sized burger patties.
  • Feel free to substitute whatever bun or burger toppings you like.
  • 80/20 means 80% lean and 20% fat. Ā This is the best ratio for burgers.
